Bluebeard's First Wife (2009)

20 x 45cm Mixed media

A little maiden hiding behind a mask of purity carried around inside her a heavy weight. She seemed as naive as a child and glowed with the sweetness of an angel. Her face and speech were as pure as newly fallen snow but her core was tainted by the rusty old key in her belly. Swallowed so it could never reveal its terrible secret, the key dominated her every thought. Behind the innocent smiles and gentle doe eyes her mind rotted with the knowledge of her past.

Nightmares haunted her sleep every night. She dreamt that she would wake up one morning and find that her skin has become clear as glass and all would be able to gaze in horror at her awful secret. The illusion she created was so convincing however that everyone in the kingdom trusted her purity completely and held her to be the most innocent creature in the land. Slowly being driven insane by the guilt and fear of being discovered, she never let her facade slip but silently lugged the rusty old key in her belly forever.
