Bluebeard's Seventh Wife (2009)
20 x 45cm Mixed media
The daughter of a noble king and queen was bewitched to turn into a vicious beast. When the sun set she grew long claws and massive black wings and her mouth filled with long jagged teeth. Even in her natural form she was plagued with hunger for human flesh and could eat nothing else. Banished to the forest she plotted how to catch a meal. Disgusted with her own cravings for the warmth of blood in her mouth and the crunch of bone against her teeth she battled with her conscience daily.
She bound herself in thick woodland ropes near the path that strangers passed through. A helpless maiden needn’t wait long for a chivalrous knight or kind prince to come along and rescue her. Indeed she looked so frail and sweet that her rescuer would instantly be overcome with love for her poor gentle frame. Little did they know that she was ravenous and planning to devour them as soon as they fell asleep. Heavily burdened with grief and guilt she wept even as she ripped them to pieces.
