Blacking Out 1-4 (2009) from The Family Album Series

20 x 25cm each Digital prints on textured paper

In The Family Album Series cherished childhood photographs are transformed into nightmarish images of trauma and fear. Testing her sentimentality and nostalgia the artist defaced images of herself as a child in an attempt to pinpoint the origin of possible neuroses and character disorders. Disturbing but delicately applied alterations create quietly unsettling scenes; a toddler stares proudly at their plump breasts, another wets themselves and helps their shadow to vomit. Others are blind, obliterated by dots, clutched by large hands or wearing grimacing bestial expressions. Tiny demons, faceless, emotionless and lacking. Our tendency to imagine narratives is fed by the ominous presence of an unknown adult and the strange intangible black forms that threaten to engulf the pictures in to darkness.
